At the request of the Consulate-General of Japan in Melbourne and Dengon Net, a Japanese community lifestyle magazine in Melbourne, our senior associate, Dai Ueda, delivered a seminar on “Basic Knowledge of the Australian Divorce System” at the Consulate-General in Melbourne on 16 February.
In family law matters, the parties’ “feelings” are often more significant than in other areas of law. Accordingly, Japanese nationals facing divorce issues frequently seek advice from Japanese lawyers who understand Japanese perspectives on family. However, in the state of Victoria, the number of Japanese lawyers who specialise in family law is reportedly smaller relative to the size of the Japanese community than in New South Wales or Queensland. As a result, many members of the Japanese community experiencing divorce-related concerns attended this Melbourne seminar.
Family law is governed by federal legislation. In addition, following the digitisation of various procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic, a substantial portion of family law matters can be handled by our Sydney office. Please feel free to contact us for further assistance.
